Mount Sinai Medical School Certifies New Online Learning System for M.D.'s Performing Driver Physicals

Houston based Training Alternatives Group (TAG) develops new course to respond to concerns of the National Transportation Safety Board.

WASHINGTON: According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), many of the physicians and other medical practitioners who conduct the physical exams of the nation's commercial truck and motorcoach drivers need to increase their knowledge and understanding of the federal Department of Transportation's (DOT) driver physical qualification requirements.

Responding to the NTSB's recommendation, a new online learning system was recently made available by the National Academy of DOT Medical Examiners (NADME). NADME's decision to provide training on-line initially was made in recognition that not every medical examiner can easily attend a live seminar. By making training on the legal requirements governing the driver physical exam readily and conveniently available online to the thousands of geographically dispersed medical professionals throughout the country, medical practitioners will have more options and greater opportunities available to obtain this critically important training.

Now, as an additional benefit to the medical examiner community, beginning July, 2005, New York City's prestigious Mount Sinai Medical School will start awarding six (6) continuing medical education (CME) credit hours to every medical examiner who completes NADME's medical examiner training program. Under the NADME program, Mount Sinai's CME credits will be available not only to physicians who hold either an MD (medical doctor) or DO (doctor of osteopathic medicine) degree, but also to chiropractors, physicians assistants and nurse practitioners.

NADME, a non-profit organization, established its training program specifically to ensure that every medical professional who is eligible to perform the required truck and motorcoach driver physical examinations knows and fully understands the DOT's governing requirements.

In addition to receiving CME credits, medical examiners who pass the NADME examination after completion of the training will be awarded NADME certification in recognition of having demonstrated their knowledge and understanding of the DOT requirements.

Mount Sinai's award of six (6) CME credits is especially significant because it is not limited to physicians and is also because it provides an additional advantage for individual medical examiners to consider when deciding the best way to obtain training on DOT's requirements. NADME's on-line training will be available around-the clock and at the personal convenience of each medical practitioner, regardless of where he or she lives or practices. Also for the sake of convenience, the training does not have to be completed in one sitting, and can be started, stopped, and restarted to fit the busy schedule of each medical practitioner. In addition, NADME's on-line training gives medical practitioners the option of not having to travel or incur travel related out-of-pocket expenses. "The flexibility and efficiency of NADME's online training, together with the CMEs from Mount Sinai, will be a big plus for every medical practitioner, but especially those who practice in the small and rural communities," says Dr. William Nassetta, who, together with Dr. Jeffrey Liva and Pete Van Beek, developed NADME's training program.
